Edge cases worth knowing.

Carrier-locked phones

Phones bought through carrier financing are often network-locked. The eSIM hardware works fine, but the carrier may reject foreign profiles until your phone is unlocked. Most carriers unlock automatically after 60–90 days of paid bills.

US iPhone 14 and newer

Sold in the US, these have no SIM tray — eSIM is the only option. That's a plus for travel.to: you scan the QR and your phone is fully online with no physical SIM to manage.

Older phones (pre-2018)

No eSIM support. iPhone X and earlier, original Pixel and Pixel 2, Galaxy S9 and earlier — these phones need a physical SIM. travel.to doesn't ship physical SIMs.

Not sure?

Open Settings → General → About → "Available SIM" or "EID". If you see an EID number, you have eSIM. iPhone shortcut: dial *#06# — if EID shows alongside IMEI, you're good.
